RESUMO

Some aspects of the morphology and feeding behavior of three species of vampire bats were comparatively studied. Research was undertaken during 1980 and 1981, in three different localities: Fazenda Paraguassu, Município de Santa Gertrudes, interior of São Paulo State; Bairro do Perequê, Município de Ilhabela, on the coast of São Paulo State; Fazenda Paraíso, Município de Esmeraldas, interior of Minas Gerais state. Diaemus youngii was the only species observed at all study localities, while Diphilla ecaudata was only seen at Fazenda Paraíso. Desmodus rotundus was seen at Fazenda Paraguassu and Fazenda Paraíso. In all localities the preys were poultry roosted on branches (Diaemus and Diphylla) or in a chicken-coop (Diphylla and Desmodus). No bat attack on animaIs sleeping on the floor was observed. Under favorable environmental conditions (dark night, without rain or wind) the feeding activity of vampire bats could be observed during almost all night, beginning at about 19:00h and ending about 4:30h. Some environmental factors such as moonlight, heavy rains and winds, tend to reduce the period of activity of these bats. On moonlight nights the bats were generally active during the darkest period. During heavy-rainy nights they were seen after the rain had stopped or considerably reduced in intensity...
