RESUMO

The purpose of this research on corporeality of chronic schizophrenic patients was to study the body language, wherein the body is the vehicle of psychic expression and conflicts, "for various reasons something was imprisoned deep inside the individual, which he couldn t make known " (Barbosa, 1996). A literary review was fIrst carried out and then 15 patients were selected for observation. These patients had to fulfill the following criteria: a) to be included - diagnosis of schizophrenia; ages between 30 years to 60 years; chronic infirmity; desire to participate in the study and b) to be excluded - evidence of a neurological disease or mental retardation. Method: The Clinical Method was utilized to conduct a Qualitative Phenomenological Research. Tools and Procedures: The study was conducted in four stages: A) Documentary Research - psychiatric history and clinical conditions; B) Life History - obtained through semi-structured interviews; C) A Psychomotor Examination of the patient; D) Direct Observation or Participation in expressive and motor activities. Results: 1. History of multiple Psychiatric hospitalizations; 2. The first symptoms of the disease appeared during adolescence (between the age of 15 years to 18 years); 3. Family Antecedents were present, which included alcoholism and separations; 4. Stable clinical condition with recurring episodes of audible and visual hallucinations and deliriums; 5. Difficulty in making and maintaining friendships; 6. Phobias, nightmares, smoking and alcoholism; 8. Excessive timidity regarding. the opposite sex; 9. Incapable of conjugal relationships; 10. The clinical condition showed an important degree of mental derangement; 11. Rigid walk; 12. Posture: humpback with protruding shoulders; 13. Inexpressive facial expression as well as gestures; 14. Body scheme and rhythm affected. Conclusion: Considering the aspects studied: a) The chronic schizophrenic patients chosen here showed that there was a relationship between life history which included psychiatric history and corporeal expression; and b) another important factor which was the relationship between the use of psychotropic medication and long periods of hospitalization
