RESUMO

Eriophora bistriata (Araneidae) is a pre-social spider, common in Brazilian cerrado. The spiders have individual orb-webs but cooperate in capture large prey. The spiders built the individual orbs daily, under a common suport silk line that is permanent and very resistant. The orbs are linked to each other by secondary support lines, forming the capture web. During the day, the spiders rest in dense silk nest, built by all the ccolony members. In this Thesis, we study biological, behavioral and ecological aspects of Eriophora bistriata, to understand some adaptations of this species to live in cerrado. The work was conducted near Itirapina (2215 S 47 49 w), São Paulo State, Brazil, where the predominant vegetation is cerrado. Field work was done between February, 1984 until July, 1986. The life cycle of Eriophora bistriata is univoltine and the development in the population is sincronous. The individual growth is related to the abundance of resources -flying insects. When resources are scarce in Fall and winter, the population consists of eggsacs and inactive nynphs only; during the rainy season (spring and summer) these spiders are abundant...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
