RESUMO

Previous studies of reportings published on the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo indicate that the visual representation of children on journalistic photographies develops two important roles: the anchor of the verbal text and the complementary, according to a distinc thought of Barthes for a relation text-image on the discursive process. The first one uses photographies of children to ilustrate the reportings about the thematic question of childhood, such as school/education, safety, health and behaviour. The second one is used to complement the verbal information, not always having direct conection with the non-verbal text, what can be considered, in some cases as an element that leads to dramatic strengh on certain conflict themes in our society, like wars, tragedies and accidents. This research has as its aim the analysis of the cases of visual representation of children in reporting that indicate the complementary of the verbal information, examining how the meanings are built and which are the efects of sense obtained by the image resources. The question to be investigated, thus, is what is the role developed by the use of image of children in certain journalistic reportings, which themes do not report directly the child purpose. For it, was analyzed the journalistic treatment on the construction of a visual scene and on the articulation of the verbal text and non-verbal text on the press. The corpus is built of a selection of reportings related to thematic chosen on the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo, examined for eight months. It looks for classification system of the categories of analysis, from the information given by the own texts (verbal and non-verbal), to identify the differences on the format of the journalistic treatment used on visual configurations. So from the studies of the theories of the journalism and photography, and of discursive-semiotic and plastic, referring to the analyse itself, it was done a study of how the child is visually represented on the brazilian press, according to the several strategies to keep and maintain the attention of the reader.
