RESUMO

The âEstado Novoâ period (1937-1945) was characterized as a moment of social organization, based in morality and religiousness through family. In this context, the psychiatry found its development space, acting with the government, in form that the order was preserved not more like a simple exclusion process, but through prevention and reintegration of madness. This process was developed acording to Michel FoucaultÂs theory of Genealogy, in which madness is something without any kind of ânatureâ or âessenceâ of itÂs own, but a sence given by each social group in historical times. I this direction, the study looked for the forms wich the several social and cultural groups of RecifeÂs population turned into targets of the police and medical persecution. From the study of the articles of that time, developed by psychiatry (in order to furfil scientific and structional purposes), yonder psychiatric records itself (wich could present precious informations only by itÂs dataÂs structures) madness was being traced as disobedience of the established standards, in that it is related to the physical aspects (appearence), thoughts and behaviors. It was possible to perceive how the social behaves of all family members was traced by the childhood questions; how womenÂs ârebelâ acts worked as the master causes of their internments, due to the life style proposed to them, yonder the ways society used to deal with it (the internments itself and the âcorrectiveâ treatments applied); and at last, how the inhabitants of the âmocambosâ has been being associate to the most diverse forms of psychoses, that varied from the fact they live in marginality to the belief in african origin cults and the use of alcohol. It is inside of this perspective of study that these inadequate and intolerable considered aspects ended showing the real experience of madness (and not only its organic aspects) during the âEstado Novoâ
