RESUMO

The constructions involving verbs which select more than an internal argument have been extensively studied in the field of Generative Linguistics. However, there are still some interesting facts which require interpretation. This dissertation is the result of a syntactic study compairing this kind of constructions in English and in the Portuguese spoken by the people trom the South-east of the state of Minas Gerais, in Brazil, more exactly, an area called Zona da Mata Mineira. I wiIl refer to this dialect as PBM. FoIlowing Larson (1988), I call V NP PP .constructions such as John gave a book to Mary Dative Constructions. A sentence such as John gave Mary a book (V NP NP) is called Doubled Object Construction, ODp in this dissertation. It is a rather rare type of construction in the Brazilian Portuguese (PB) as a whole. It is limited to the speakers of some of its dialects, the PBM being one of them. For these people, a sentence such as A Maria deu o João um livro is quite common Based on data trom English and the Portuguese trom Minas Gerais (Zona da Mata Mineira), I demonstrate that the order V NP NP does not represent the same phenomenon in these two languages (or dialects). Thus, the analysis I suggest for the occurrence ofV NP NP in PBM differs trom those which have already been proposed for English and otlíer languages which exhibit what I call genuine ODps. I propose that the two possible orders V NP PP and V PP NP are basic in PB. V NP NP wiIl be the result of the interaction of distinct factors. One ofthem is syntactic and causes the order V PP NP. The other one is morpho-phonologic and its main consequence is the vowel (preposition) a dropping
