RESUMO
The aim of the present study was to assess the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) estimated through different field tests in adolescents based on a reference method. Participants were 115 adolescents (12.16 ± 0.8 years), of both sexes. We measured body mass, height and skinfold thickness, and then calculated the body mass index and the percentage of body fat. The participants performed three different field tests to evaluate CRF, in random order: Cooper s 9-minute running/walk (COOPER); 1-mile running/walk (MILE) and 20-m shuttle-run (SR-20m). Oxygen consumption (VO2) was calculated using specific equations for each test. Additionally, direct analysis of VO2 (reference method) was performed in the laboratory, using a portable gas analyzer (K4 b2, Cosmed), on a treadmill protocol, and a previous warm-up of 3 minutes at a speed of 6 km/h, and starting at 7 km/h and 1% of inclination, with increments of 1 km/h each minute, keeping the same inclination until test termination. The largest VO2 value found at test termination was considered the VO2peak, expressed in relative (ml/kg/min), absolute (L/min) form and adjusted for body mass allometry (ml/kg0,67/min). No differences were found, with repeated-measures ANOVA (P>0.05), between the means of VO2 (ml/kg/min) measured by the reference method and VO2 estimated by the MILE test in the girls group, and after allometric adjustment, no differences were found between VO2 (ml/kg0,67/min) estimated by SR-20m and MILE tests, for the same group. The performance data (standard error of estimate and explication R) and concordance (x ± SD of the differences) showed that the MILE test provided the best estimate of VO2 (ml/kg/min) for the boys (SEE=6.20; R2=0.58; 5.07±12.58). The SR-20m test represented the best alternative for girls (SEE=6.49; R2=0.24; 2.45±12.64), and the MILE test such no showed tendency of measure. Thus, we conclude that, after the comparison, performance and agreement analysis, the SR-20m and MILE tests were the best estimated the VO2 of boys and girls when compared a to reference method.
