RESUMO

Brazilian production of alcohol and sugar holds an important position among producing countries in the world, exhibiting 5.4 millions ofhectares ofharvested sugarcane for industry in 1998. The State of São Paulo contributes with 2.5 millions of hectares of that total. The agricultural operations of planting and harvesting represent approximately 65% of the total sugar and alcohol production costs. Around 17% of the agricultural operation costs is due to planting. The low yielding for conventional planting operations where an operator plants about 0.27 ha/day justifies the development of a mechanism, aiming a uniform plant distribution. This work intends to improve a sugarcane billets dosage device based on engineering resources, making it feasible for future field application. The computational aids employed were: WM3D for the virtual simulation of the proposed models; MatLab to calculate the optimization equations solution and Excel to perform the statistica1 analysis of the data generated by the tests with the real prototype. The optimization model simulated with on1y one of the analyzed sugarcane diameters, showed satisfactory results, with characteristics compatible with the models presenting ideal operational conditions. Optimized model simulations for cane diameter varying of 10 mm, showed cells filled with excess of billets which is in agreement with the experimental results. The experimental results analyzed indicate that the operation configuration C1R1 - Feeding Channel with billets and Dosage Cylinder rotation velocity of 3.1 rpm - presented the better response to billets incidence in the cells.
