RESUMO

Research shows that Brazilian Portuguese speakers no longer use the referential null subject. Such reduction is mainly caused by the reduction of the inflectional paridigm in Brazílian Portuguese. Nevertheless, a significant use of null pronominal subjects can still be found in writing. This work analyzes the use of null pronominal subjects vs full pronominal subjects in school writing and in the data presented by a child in the process of acquisition. The relevant data are quantitatively compared to those in Duarte (1995) and qualitatively compared to those in Figueiredo e Silva (1996) and Modesto (1999) in order to verify if the constraints found in spoken language can still be found in the schooling processoAs a consequence, this work also attempts to investigate the role that the use of null pronominal subjects may have in school, since they are not encountered in the spoken language. The leading hypothesis defended in this work is that the child has triggered a change towards the use of full pronominal subjects in BP while the school s role is to try to revert the change by means of the learning process
