RESUMO

This research aimed at investigating a teaching practice focused on Al Gore‟s film An inconvenient truth, its subjects being young university students of a Publicity and Journalism course in the city of São Paulo. A survey was also made of some available films dealing with environmental issues and their potential for use in environmental education. The methodology employed was the qualitative approach and, in its turn, was characterized by an exploratory case study of an iconographic nature. The research in the classroom occurred in three distinct phases: the first one was an attempt to find out the subjects‟ opinion about the environment and their participation in responsible actions; in the second phase, the subjects were shown the film and given a questionnaire; in the third phase, they had the opportunity to discuss the film‟s theme with the teacher. The analysis of the data and the interviewees‟ answers shows that the use of the film was important and favored debate and reflection on environmental problems and their risks. Likewise, it contributed to sensitize and motivate the students to several environmental issues, especially those related to global warming. The study highlighted the relevance of the use of new languages, specifically the cinema with its ability to portray a reality that many students are not aware of as a very useful tool in the teaching-learning process as well as in the construction of a sustainable society.
