RESUMO

This work addresses the application of environmental salubrity index (ISA) on urban population sectors of the city of Ouro Branco/MG (Brazil) attended by public health units and the comparison between itself and health indexes. The research scope aims the relation among public health and environmental sanitation. The ISA determination was executed through structured questionnaire application related to sanitation conditions (water supply, sewage and garbage collection), habitation conditions and social conditions (education, finance, culture and leisure), applied during the year 2008. The health indicators values were obtained jointly to Municipal Health Secretariat by registers at SINAN Grievance and Notification Information System referred to year 2008. This research confirmed that the populations health is related to sanitation which the community is inserted as well as socioeconomic and cultural conditions. For the perfect well being state, the population must be served by good material and social conditions, both delineated at environmental salubrity index from the communities included in this study. The researched population segments were classified as average salubrity, being the average value as 0,73 for the environmental salubrity. The studied health indexes based on registers of diarrhoea, verminosis, esquistossomosis, dengue and conjunctivitis.
