RESUMO

Among the dilemmas experienced by contemporary Brazilian literature, especially over the last two decades of the twentieth century, I have chosen to discuss issues of identity and subjectivity, as they present themselves in three short stories by Modesto Carone, Dias melhores (As marcas do real, 1979), Ponto de vista (Aos pés de Matilda, 1980), and O Natal do viúvo (Por Trás dos Vidros, 2007). Using the assumptions of Critical Theory, as formulated by Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Walter Benjamin, this study aims to investigate the aesthetic formalization of social issues present in Modesto Carone`s and hopes to contribute to new possibilities of interpretating the Brazilian authors work within the reality of contemporary literature, understood as a critical element of society.
