RESUMO

A prospective study of 135 low-risk patients fori nfectious morbidity development in puerperum submitted to cesarean section was done with the aim of study the use of antibiotics effect for reduction of infection rate. The patients were randomly distributed into 3 groups: 45 women received Cefoxitin as a prophylactic, 45 received Chloramphenicol as therapeutics and 45 did not receive any treatment. The clinical evaluation did not show any statistical significant ditference between the treatment groups regarding infection in puerperium. It was also shown that most of the diagnosis for infection was done after hospital discharge. The only element that had an influence on the development of infectious morbidity was the type of incision. It was concluded that the antibiotics administration as prophylactic or therapeutics did not benefit the patients regarding infection after cesarean section and that a follow-up after hospital discharge is required for the correct identification of this complication
