RESUMO

The thesis was elaborated into a literature review and two papers. The literature review was on the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia worldwide, particularly in Brazil, as well as its determinant factors, specific interventions and its repercussions on infant nutritional status and morbidity. The first article analyzes the influence of determinant factors on haemoglobin levels (Hb) of infants at 12 months of life, residents in four municipalities of the Southern Forest Zone of Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil. A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the net impact of each variable on haemoglobin level. The final model showed a significant impact of variables socioeconomic (no television at home), birth weight, duration of exclusive breastfeeding and occurrence of diarrhoea on haemoglobin level. These variables all together explained 12,7% of the variation of hemoglobin level at 12 months. The second article evaluates the impact of weekly iron sulphate supplementation from 12 to 18 months on haemoglobin level, nutritional status and morbidity. After six months of intervention, the mean haemoglobin level for the treated infants increased 1.6g/dL reaching 10.7g/dL. About 42.3% of the sample recovered the haemoglobin levels for values ≥11g/dL, while in the control group there was a reduction of 0.5g/dL. With regard to the nutritional status, it was observed a significant recovery of weight-for-age for the treated group when compared to the control group. The median duration of diarrhoea was significantly lower for the intervention (12-18 months) group when compared with the median duration of diarrhoea of infants from birth to 12 months
