RESUMO

The mammalian trachea have been used as an experimental pattern to simulate drug effects over the bronchial smooth muscle cells and has not being completely studied. In order to contribute to the comprehension of the tracheobronchial features we decided to perform a morphological and quantitative approach of guinea-pig tracheobronchial regions. It has been used nine adult animais, of both sexes. In six of them pieces frem different regions of trachea and bronchi were taken to make membrane preparations. After convenient staining and clarifying, the pieces were mounted and used to study the morphology and the density of ganglia. From the other three animais we took samples of tracheal and bronchial muscles to be measured. The average number of ganglia in each region varied from 8.6 (superior) to 1.0 (Ieft brenchus). The average number of neurons in each region varied from 98.1 (superior) to 4.6 (Ieft bronchus) (p<0.05). The average number of neurons per ganglion in each region varied from 11.9 (superior) to 2.2 (left bronchus). There was a clear degree among the numbers of ganglia and neurons of the several regions, and there was more ganglia and neurons in the upper than in the lower parto Tracheal and bronchial muscles go along with the graduation of ganglia and neurons, although not statistically significant. Results show an important difference in the number of neurons in the various regions of trachea and bronchi. This might be related to dissimilar extension of the innerved territory, including probably the tracheobronchial muscle
