RESUMO

This is a mainly experimental work, done with the aim of better understanding the dynamic behavior of a rotating shaft with a crack. Best understanding of the influence of a crack on the dynamic behavior of a rotating shaft will enable the development of procedures to identify the existence of cracks in shafts, so that predictive maintenance can be performed. Modal analysis experimental tests were done on a shaft with a small transversal notch simulating a fatigue crack. Tests were done at different angles and positions of the crack, so that variation in the values of natural frequencies of vibration and the form of the Frequency Response Functions could be assessed, with the objective of identifying some behavioral trend that would aloe for the establishment of patterns that can be used in predictive maintenance procedures. A review on the literature on identification of cracks on rotating shafts and also of the state of the art research in the area was done. The obtained experimental results are presented, together with an analysis of these results, with the aim to establish a relationship between the results and the variation on the shaft stiffness due to the presence of the crack, highlighting mainly the effect of the variation on the second moment of area of the shaft on its dynamic behavior. Suggestions for future work are also presented.
