RESUMO

The objectives of this work were to aspects of the histology and morphometry of the small intestine of adult and post- puberty big-eared opossum Didelphis aurita. The morphometric description of the speciess small intestine focused on the mucous, sub-mucous and muscular layers. The entero- endocrinal-cells and the cells of the myoenteric nervous and sub-mucous ganglia in the members several sections were counted. Staining techniques identified and quantified argyrophilic cells (Grimelius), argentafin cells (Masson-Fontana modified) and insulin immuno-reactive cells (direct (immunoperoxidase), myoenteric and sub-mucous ganglia (H- E), coupled to the mucous, submucosal and muscle layers (H- E). Amount of entero-endocrinal argyrophilic, argentafin and insulin immuno-reactive cells was distally less, albeit a higher number of argyrophilic cells occurred when compared to that of the others types. The number of these cells did not vary among the initial, middle and distal regions of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum (P>0.05), with the exception of the argyrophilic cells in the jejunum. An average of approximately 17.29 sub-mucous ganglia/mm2 and 23.77 myoenteric ganglia/mm2 of the muscle layer were found. No difference in the number of the above-mentioned ganglia among the intestine segments (P>0.05) was reported. There was no relationship between the number of sub-mucous and myoenteric nervous ganglia and endocrine cells of the small intestines different segments (P>0.05). There was difference of intestine layers between the duodenum, jejunum and ileum (P<0.05) was reported, with no variations among the initial, middle and distal regions of each segment (P>0.05). No relationship existed between the number of entero-endocrinal cells and the layer thickness of the small intestine of adult and post-puberty D. aurita (P>0.05). There was no relationship between the number of sub-mucous and myoenteric nervous ganglia and the thickness of the small intestine layers (P>0.05). Although no difference was registered in most endocrinal cells (P>0.05) between adult (Class 1) and post-puberty animals (Class 2), greater thickness in the muscle layer of the duodenum and jejunum was only registered in Class 2 opossums (P<0.05). Histological and neuron-endocrinal aspects of the small intestine of opossum Didelphis aurita showed great similarity to that in the literature on placenta mammals.
