RESUMO

The aim to the elimination of leprosy as a public health care problem to the year 2000, as proposed by the WHO, was stretched to the year 2005 in some countries. At present, the disease is considered endemics in 12 countries in the world, and Brazil, along with the eleven countries, both African and Asiatic, are responsible for the disease cases that are existent around the world. The intense urban process which has occurred in the country, especially in the 70’s, not only aggravated leprosy but all other endemics that are. This study aims to analyze the leprosy endemics in the City of Fernandópolis municipality urban area, according to spatial distribution, describing its relationship with the population’s life condition targeting the orientation of a local plan of public control policies and elimination of leprosy. It deals with an ecologic study whose death data were obtained from SIAN (System of Information of Aggravation and Notification) in the period from 1997 to 2002 and reference data as to population were obtained in the BIGS (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) relating to Demographic Census of the year 2000. The geo-reference cartographic base was acquired in the planning sector of the local city hall. The Social Lack Index built with income variables, schooling, urban structure and habitat conditions classified the urban census sectors and those were compared with the respective coefficients of the medium detection of newly cases of leprosy in the time frame. The geo-reference of aggregated data by the census sectors have enabled that analysis. It has been established of high (17,62%), of medium (24,43%), and of low risk collective area (57,96%). The proposed method contributed to detect the social-economic disproportion and to identify the relation with the distribution standards of leprosy in the municipality. Priority areas of health care actions made clear locally. It is believed that only with inter-sector health care actions that show the improvement of life condition of the population, the municipality will be able to reach and keep the so hoped elimination purpose of leprosy as a health care problem.
