RESUMO

The development of Distance Education, Educação a Distância (EaD), is intimately related to the evolution of the communication and information technologies. The graphic interface has the function to permit the student access to all the parts of the system, in special the content to be learnt. Having in mind the importance of this interface in the relation process with the content, the general object of this study was to evaluate the impact of one interface from a general chemistry digital text book in the performance of the users. The theory and methodological foundations were based in the Cognitive Ergonomics. The methodological path was based in the Evaluation Technology and (Re)Conception of Graphic Interfaces - TAI (Silvino, 2004). The sample was stratified in three groups, matching the target public prescribed in the extension course in which this book is used. It was observed the navigation activity of a total of 47 people. To guide the navigations three tasks were suggested with different structuration problems levels that, also, allowed the comparison of the information obtained. The results pointed to important effects in the graphic interface mainly as a clue-provider that permit the users to elaborate representations to the actions and operation strategies, more or less, adequate. The navigation analyses showed relevant for reveling questions that were risen and questions that were not by the analyses of the intrinsic usability and for, furthermore, elicit, in a precise and objective way, the positive and negative points, the critic events that occurred and the strategies used that influenced the users navigation performance. These shown aspects have the important role to guide the reconception of the interface in a way it starts to consider the users logic and stop being the students attention focus during the study process.
