RESUMO

This thesis presents the results of research conducted on the mapping and analysis of the structure of the imaginarium of mathematics teachers in the state school system in the city of Recife, relating these mathematical presuppositions to the mythical structures with which they work. Interpreting imaginarium as a place dentre-savoirs stemming from the existential anguish of the human being in the face of the passing of time and his or her mortal destiny, how are they to perform the pedagogical practice of mathematics teachers users of a language rooted in a conceptual antithesis through logical, irrefutable discourse? The overall objective of this study is to analyze the role of the imaginarium within the understanding of educational phenomena from a perspective that deals with the inter-relation between reason and imagination, understanding them as complimentary states, but not interlocking. The theoretical/methodological base that underpinned this research was the General Theory of imaginarium by Gilbert Durand, in association with the Archetypal Test with Nine Elements (AT9), as well as semi-structured interviews. The participants included 20 mathematics teachers and 20 teachers of various disciplines. The result of the of the analyze of the AT9 associated with the analysis of the interviews helped delineate the profile of the imaginarium of the teachers who were investigated, and then relating them to the educational phenomena taking place in the normal school day. The mythical micro-universes of these teachers that were revealed through the AT9 fall into three structures of the imaginarium, heroic, mystical and synthetic. There was no predominance of the heroic structure among the mathematics teachers, as was initially suspected, in virtue of the fact that this structure is rooted in a conceptual antithesis. In fact, it was closer to the logical precision of mathematical rational. The projected elements in the protocols of these teachers are inspired by the forces of life, representing utilitarian functions for the character, either, helping him or her fight the beast, or as if a helper in the defense from the danger that it represents. It is symbols of life that predominantly constitute the imaginarium of this group, which project themselves in the representations of AT9, and are revealed in a positive symbolic network whose roots lie in discourse about being a teacher and the function of educating. These teachers, who are aware that they confront social malaises at a grassroots level in state schools, were not jaded by cynicism or by the adverse conditions that abound. Above all, they are bearers and spokespeople of an imaginarium deeply anchored in the dream and the belief in the possibility of contributing, transforming and reinventing education and society.
