RESUMO

In this work is presented a theoretical and experimental study of the behavior and resistance of high-frequency welded steel columns. At the Laboratory of Experimental Structural Analysis (LAEES) of the School of Engineering of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais was a performed test of compression for simple supported members with different dimensions of sections and lengths, trying to obtain a variety of the slenderness parameter. The purpose of the variation of this parameter was to study of the behavior of buckling of this new shape. Programs of tests were also established to determine the level and the distribution of residual stress along the cross-section, by using nondestructive x-ray diffraction tests, having been carried out at the COPPE/UFRJ. The models were analyzed numerically in a computer program, developed on a consistent theorical formulation, capable to accomplish the nonlinear analysis, physic and geometric, through finite-element method, considering members with initical imperfections and residual stress in the cross-section. The numerical results were compared and gauged to the experimental results in order to serve as parameter for the verification of the resistance recommended by the Brazilian code NBR 8800 for design of steel structures. The results of the columns compression tests were better fitted by the c curve, showing that this curve can be used to design high-frequency welded steel columns when the buckling is around the y axes.
