RESUMO

Fruit growing is as adequate activity for family agriculture due to the need of intense and qualified labor, besides valorized production. Among the most cultivated fruits for its economic importance, traded and consumed quantity, nutritional value and processing potential, the banana stands out. (Mussa spp.) It is one of the fruits that present the biggest loss during harvest (5%). Fruit processing as an aggregation of value, crop advantage, human promotion, food security, among others, are always seen with enthusiasm, but it is not always that technological packages reach sustainability. The previous knowledge of the community and the characteristics around it may allow a processing offer to be adjusted to the needs and infrastructure of the place, developing an alternative of pluriactivity. Associação Pontalzinho dos Trabalhadores Rurais de Mato Grosso do Sul (ASPON) is located in the rural área of the district of Terenos, 43 Km from the capital Campo Grande. It is composed by 10 families and the main product for cultivation is the banana. The objective of the research was to diagnose the community known as Associação Pontalzinho, MS emphasizing the loss in banana production and in the processing potential as an activity that aggregates and creates income and as an instrument to improve quality of life. As far as the means used are concerned, for the study, data and bibliographical, documental and field information have been collected. Information in books about family agriculture focusing on fruit growing and food security, generation of income, market, local development concepts and valorization of the banana production have been sought. A form was used in order to collect data. Results point that banana growing generates resources, but 69,2% consider their life quality could be better. When it comes to loss in banana production only in property, without considering trading, 38,4% of the associates consider that it corresponds to 10% of weekly production, such value must be quantified, for it is much higher than the one indicated by the data. Even so, 61,5% of the interviewed consider it to be a significant loss and in order to reduce it and generate income only 7,7% processed banana in candy form. It was identified the existence of 92,3% of labor which could be used in processing, mostly women , so it is suggested training and use of the technologies already available in an adequate level so that the potential for the generation of resources and the valorization of labor can be better used.
