The opening of intemational markets got possible the raise at importation of packed or prepacked foods by the countries. Brazil participates of this worldwide process, but the legislation in effect, at the country, as well as the inspection of these imported products, still didn t adapt itself to the growing process of importation. The label of packed foods is the main means of information about the product that the consumer has, when he acquires it, and that in/it there are marketing strategies and attributes of quality that have influence at the consumer at buying it. This research had as main goal to verify the adequacy of labeling glued labels or tags of packed imported products, commercialized at retail trading in Campinas - SP (Brazil), in relation to the to legislation in effect at the period of March to November 2000. It was selected two establishments, one hypermarket and a specialized imported foods store. Later on, it got identified the most commercia1izedproducts, and they were acquired at selected stores. It was identified that 97,6% of imported packed foods presented the declaration of required information at the labeling of products and 56,8% used glued tags and/or labels and tags at the package as form of labeling, revealing that the gluing of tags at the labels is a practical way and very used by importers. But, 52,1% of these tags were glued at other required information or other texts of label, damaging the reading and comprehension of them. In relation to the attributes of required information, it was verified that 100% of them were adequate in re1ation to the "size of letter", 97,6% adequate in relation to the "enhancement" and 98,4% adequate in relation to the "contrast". But it were found 555 inadequacies at the labeling of imported packed foods, mainly lack of importer s address, which can cause difficulties for the consumer if there is some doubt or problem with the product. Products that use glued/adhered tags to the package excelled by the large number of inadequacies like uncompleted required information land Portuguese mistakes. Among the packed imported food under analyze just 20% needed to declare nutritional information and, among these, 72% showed inadequacies at the declaration of nutrients that compose them, it s being possible to cause doubts for the consumer. Brazilian s legislation establishes the waming print in labels and packages of industrialized foods that have gluten, but it was verified in our study that only 52,2% showed this declaration. Among the products that used as means of information the label of own package, 90,9% described the declaration of gluten, while 81,5% that used as means of information to the consumer gluedladhered tag didn t declare the component gluten when it was present. The results of this research suggest that for the offer of a safe food, the laws must be clear, the industry and importers must be oriented and controlled, as well as, the consumer must have compatible educationallevel with present information in the labels of foods
