RESUMO

Blood culture is the best method for diagnosing bacteremia or fungemia. It is known that many factors can interfere with the results of this exam, fram the type of bacteremia, passing thraugh the blood collection, until pracessing the specimen at the laboratory. The goal of this work is to analyze factors that can interfere with the results of blood culture in a pediatric population, because there is few works done on systematization of blood culture procedures in Pediatrics. During three months, 100 blood specimens were analyzed for way and of collecting the samples, age of the subjects, clinical diagnosis, type of anti-septic substance used, the prior use of antibiotic and total volume collected for each sample. Samples positivity were related to the age of the subjects. The contamination rate related to the total number of the samples and to the number of positive samples was 5% and 19%, respectively. All false-positive specimens were collected fram children under 1 year of age. Blood culture diagnosed bacteremia caused by multi-resistant agents even in the patients that site were in use of antibiotic. Because the importance of the blood culture and the knowledge of factors that can interfere with its results, one should have a critica! analysis of its indications and of the manner ofthe blood collection in order to avoid iatragenies to the patients
