RESUMO

Introduction: The aging and smoking are factors that cause physiological and anatomical changes in the body. However, few studies report the possible dimensional changes in the vocal folds of the elderly population. Objectives: To evaluate the dimensions of the vocal folds in both sexes and to correlate them with aging, and assess the dimensions of the vocal folds in elderly smokers and nonsmokers male. Methods: We studied 30 cadavers of the elderly, 15 males and 15 females aged from 60 to 102 years. Were followed four sequential stages: 1st) History of the body; 2nd) Removal of the larynx; 3rd) Dissection of the larynx; 4th) Morphometry of the size of the vocal folds. Results: The length of the male vocal fold with an average of 15.90 mm was higher than the female with 10.39 mm. The average width of the male vocal cords was higher with the 2.37 mm to 2.31 mm female. The overall average thickness was also higher in males with an average of 2.55 mm compared with women with 2.38 mm. There was no correlation between the increase in age and dimensions of the vocal folds in the female and male. There was no difference in the macroscopic morphology of the dimensions of the vocal folds between elderly smokers and nonsmokers. Conclusions: The dimensions of length, width and thickness figures were higher in men. There was no change in the dimensions of the vocal folds with the increase of age in both sexes. The differences between the dimensios of groups of smokers and nonsmokers were not significant macroscopically.
