RESUMO

The purpose of the present study was to check the prevalence of hearing impairment in newborns hospitalized at the Neonatal MCU, Medical School, University of Campinas, and analyze the risk indicators. We assessed 979 newborn babies using Automatic Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) between January 2000 and January 2003, using the device branded ALGO, model 2e color. The prevalence of impairment in the AABR was 10.2%, being 5.3% unilaterally and 4.9% bilaterally. The risk indicators identified by univariate analysis as significantly associated with hearing screening failure were family history of congenital hearing loss, craniofacial deformity, syndromes associated with hearing loss, weight below 1,000g, asphyxia, meningitis, use of ototoxic medication and use of mechanical ventilation. Based on multivariate analysis, we observed that family history of congenital hearing loss, craniofacial deformity, syndromes associated with hearing loss, weight below 1,000g, asphyxia, hyperbilirubinemia and mechanical ventilation were the indicators that best characterized the risk group for hearing impairment. We concluded the prevalence of hearing impairment using AABR is high. Therefore it is essential that all newborn that present isolated or associated this risk indicators undergo hearing screening in situations in which it is not possible to have universal hearing screening
