RESUMO

Less permeable layers, dikes and even discontinuities may act as hydraulic barriers, interfering in the pattern of flow, with dangerous consequences in the stability of the mining slopes. This work intends to analyze the possible influences caused by the phyllites of the Batatal formation, acting as hydraulic barriers, in the flow pattern as well as in the slope stability of the botton pit of the Tamandua, Pico and Capitao do Mato mines, located in the Quadrilatero Ferrifero region, in Minas Gerais State. Geological, geotechnical, and hydrogeological characteristics of the geological units were evaluated in order to obtain the pattern of flow and the stability of slopes under several possible conditions of the hydraulic conductivity of the phyllites. These analyses were carried out with SEEP/W and SLOPE/W softwares; in this case the equilibrium limit method was applied, according to Bishop, Janbu, and Morgenstain Price procedures. It was evaluated the possible influences of flow condition on the slope safety factor of each section. The great number of variables and uncertainties complicated the perfect understanding of these phenomena. Even so it was possible to conclude that: the slope stability analyses coupled with the flow analyses showed to be very effective; it is better to use unsaturated conductivity curves indirectly determinated than to adopt evenly distributed recharge through all the geological units; the vertical components of flow are important to stablish the slope safety factor and can determine local ruptures; permeability values obtained through back analyses in previous studies (scenary 1) suggest that there is a reasonable flow through the Batatal formation.
