RESUMO

The caffeine is a drug of widespresd use and due to its ability in changing the performance during physical exercise, it has been used as ergogenic auxiliary during in several sports activities. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the caffeine on endurance time, in plasmatics concentrations of free faty acids before exercise, TBARS concentrations in urine samples by the end of exercise, plasmatic concentrations of glucose and lactate, rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and in heart rate during intermittent exercise using on an ergometer bicyc1euntil voluntary exhaustion. Ten male professionals from 15 - 26 years old, weighting from 51 - 80 Kg and considered healthy after c1inicalexaminations, took part this work. Laboratory tests were conducted in three ocasions and detime-Iag was three days. In the first day they were submited to an anaerobic threshold evaluation test. On the remaining days they performed intermittent exercise at 2:1 min effort-pause relation and intensity fixed to 30% above the anaerobic threshold. Either caffeine or placebo administrarion (5 mg/Kg) was carried out through a double-blind procedure, one hour before the exercise had begun. Despite there were no significant statistical diferences (p ?
