RESUMO

Torquato Accetto s treatise Della dissimulazione onesta, edited in 1640, was rediscovered by Benedetto Croce, and has since the 80 s raised public and critical attention. This interest not only folowed the wake of a broader context of return to studies on Aristotelian prudence, but also couched on Accetto s peculiar form of composition, based on a writing in prose endowed with harmonious sentences. This doctoral dissertation goes against the grain of that kind of criticism based on the underlying social context or on psychological projections regarding the autor, it develops, rather, a study intending to account for textual contruction under the guise of its inventio, dispositio and elocutio, as well as for the genres under which the work is inserted, those of the treatise and epidictic. The structure and style are also investigated, taking as reference classical rhetoric and treatises on wit. Political-moral common places are circunscribed too, including those of Cicero, Seneca, Augustine, through Machiavelli and the theoricians of the reason of State.
