RESUMO

Assessments of water quality in surface water bodies are increasingly incorporating both point and non-point pollutant sources. Water quality constituents are transported in the water as well as on the sediments. Predictions of constituent concentrations in the water and on the sediments require simulation models of water and sediment transport processes over land surfaces and in streams, rivers and lakes. This research developed, implemented and evaluated a watershed information system (WIS) to assist in the prediction of pollutant concentrations and in the planning of programs for water quality control in river basins. The system simulates rainfall-runoff processes and the subsequent transport of water quality constituents and sediment from both point and non-point sources. WIS includes two types of rainfall-runoff models, a network definition component, a flow and sediment routing component and a water quality transport component. The network definition component defines the configuration of the river basin. The water quality component incorporates a new routing approach that significantly decreases the computational time. Graphical user interfaces were developed to facilitate the interaction user-models. WIS was applied in a watershed in Delaware County, New York, to test the performance of its components.
