RESUMO

The focus of this investigation is the EFL teachers view about pronunciation teaching in an English private school in Fortaleza and in the Núcleo de Línguas of Ceara State University. A group of 10 teachers from each school answered a questionnaire and were also interviewed. We found out that despite the fact that the teachers from the state school have less teaching experience than the ones from the English school, the two groups have similar views about pronunciation teaching concerning the aspects researched. The teachers see pronunciation teaching as essential, but in relation to other aspects to be taught, pronunciation is still a skill in the English language teaching that is not prioritized. They recognize the necessity for teaching the suprasegmental aspects (rhythm, stress and intonation) as well as the segmental ones, they report several kinds of difficulties when teaching pronunciation and they dont see the need to expose the student to more than one English variety. For them, pronunciation teaching is still strongly connected to repetition drills and passives listening and they intend their students to be able to understand and to be understood without looking for a perfect pronunciation. These findings show the necessity of moreresearch in this area to investigate the efficacy of pronunciation teaching materials. It is essential that teachers are mobilized in order to improve their phonological knowledge and their teaching practice. It is also important that institutions play a more active role in the development and growth of their teachers.
