RESUMO

This research aims to analise the process of urbanization of Colonial Brazil between 1532 and 1640, verifying if these process was a result of a know-how transference developed along Middle Age in Portugal, and well-adapted to the new colony conditions or was a result of never seen procedures of urbanization, derived form theoretical knowledge defined in great part by the Renaissance tractadists about city, its shape and performance. Results obtained point to a transference of the Portuguese city models to the territory currently known as Brazil by vernacular knowledge accumulated through centuries and not by an existence of a specific model developed to the new Portuguese colony and based in contemporary renascentist treatises. To its development, this research used knowledge of History, Urban Morphology and Social Logic of Space to verify the relationship between the shapes and ways of the Portuguese city performance and the cities developed by Portuguese in Brazil, searching for their similarities and differences, permanences and mutations, trying to define the âgenotypeâ of Colonial Brazil cities, which have no relations with ideal models neither in shape nor in performance
