RESUMO
To write a weekly chronicle was a challenge to some of our Brazilian writers, among them Machado de Assis. Since the beginning of 1860, Machado had a hard task of transforming a daily life into weekly news. These news had not only the objective of inform but also of arising the interest of the public. 50, through a cohesive text, the weekly chronicle had the function of narrate the recent events and also offer itself an interesting piece of reading. 50, it was necessary "to recover" the happenings or news that had been already published of something interesting that could arise the chronicle reader s interest and also to make the reading a delightful one. According to this, each chronicle writer tried to develop his own style of writing. Machado de Assis developed many resources and techniques which would arise laugh from their readers. His writings had a comic effect because he added irony and critical analysis about politics and other subjects creating "something new" that the readers needed (although they had already known the subject of his writings). Machado also invested in the text cohesive composition and in the development of a narrator worried with the organisation of the context. Anyway, the writing of a chronicle. involves special attention because the writer has to create a literary interest and it demands the use of techniques developed by Machado in his works. In this study we are also looking at another aspect of Machado s career, that is the drama. In his opinion, the theatre had a moralising function and it could help society, moralising it. From his critical writings we can be aware of his ideas about Art and Literature as well as analyse some aspects of his drama. If in his chronicles he was so skilful, we are going to study some aspects of his drama, that were written at the same time of the chronicles, in order to conclude about his ability also in.this genre.
