RESUMO

The process of development during the transition to adulthood in young adults studying in Adults education in the evening schools narratives is marketed by an interplay between work and school. The spaces of work and school are understood as two space learning that mediate the relationship between the young adult and his/her world. In this relationship, uncertainty marks their conditions of socializations and young adults have to subject and adapt themselves and resist to different elements of the ideology. In this essay, we are going to conceive transition as the dialectic relationship process between the young adult and his/her contexts of development, which are marked by the tension created between old patterns and new information in their processes of socialization. In this tension, meanings related to their I-position are built on the dialogical impact of ideology and emotion. In this work, self is understood as built by multiples positions throughout time and space and as a speech process is which self is construed in concrete dialogic interactions. In this process, autobiographic memory is constantly negotiated with others, the self and the culture. Therefore, the process of development is conceived as dynamic, complex and systemic. This work aimed at analyzing four young adults, who studied in high school and worked simultaneously, meaning construction and positioning in narratives and argumentations. They participated individually in five sessions of semi-structured interviews focused on their school and job histories, the explanations they built about school and work and their future expectations. The interviews were thoroughly transcribed and data were submitted to a dialogical thematic analysis. Results indicated that three main themes were interrelated in narratives by three main meanings: personal independency; having a good job and having a hard life, which were linked by a tension between collectives and individuals to built process of making-meaning and positioning about being young, a student and worker. In the interplay between work and school, transition was market by tensions, negotiations and transformation in temporality of the past (I-student, I-child, I-dependent, I-happy), the present (I-student, I-worker, I-independent, I-responsible, I-martyr) and the future (-worker, I-independent, I-happy, I-autonomous, I-include in society).
