RESUMO

The aim of this study is to characterize the day-to-day teaching practice in the initial grades. The problem: which are the main factors in teaching the initial grades of Ensino Fundamental (Brazilian basic education for children from seven up to ten years old) and how these factors express themselves in classroom practice, in the school organization and its curriculum and also in its relation with the children and the families.The investigation, which has a qualitative approach was developed through interviews andd ay-to-day school systematic observation from two groups of first grade from a newly launched Ensino Fundamental net. Each one of the groups was in charge of teachers with different characteristics: one experienced in EducaçãoInfantil(Brazilian basic education for children from zero up to six years old) and the other experienced only in Ensino Fundamental. Not only was the importance of literacy during this school period considered, but also possible differences among the teachers experiences. The study started from the hypothesis that these differences from their previous teaching background wouldn t be that remarkable in Ensino Fundamental practice,even in a newly launched educational net, due to the strong educational system tradition found in this segment.Thisis even noticeable in the official documents- Referencial Curricular Nacional para a Educação Infantil and Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais(that are used as a reference for Brazilian educational structure system) - where we can see that the learning expectations are different: Educação Infantil aims to raise happy healthy children, whereas Ensino Fundamental has the formation of future productive and capable professionals as its goal. In order to reach these goals, school over the years, developed various devices, such as time-controlling ones, discipline, production and also content. The hypothesis could be confirmed witht he help of studies about the educational culture by Rosa Fátima de Souza,Jurjo Torres Santomé and Antonio Viñao Frago, as well as literacy studies by Mary Júlia Dietzsch,Telma Weisz and Sandra Maria Sawaya
