RESUMO

This Dissertation argue that despite todayâs American confrontationist and unilateralist foreign policy towards China, George W. Bushâs administration policy in relation to China remains the same as the policy defined in Nixonâs administration. Since Nixonâs administration, the policy of containment for the engagement (or âengage for containâ) has not changed. Firstly because the United States wishes to avoid the rise of a hegemonic power in Eurasia and maintain the liberal and democratic order built up post-45; Secondly because the international system character, of the interdependence and globalization, not only favor, but demand the maintenance of long term the stability, for strategic and economics reasons. Despite their different viewpoints about international politics, the US and China search to maintain a convergent and moderate dialogue around crucial questions, such as Taiwanâs status. My intent is to show that the relations between China and United States has a certain level of balance and stability, and that tendency leads to a deeper cooperation between them.
