RESUMO

Sexuality has been a widely debated topic in recent decades, due in part to the fact that the life expectancy of the population has increased and, consequently, so has the concern for life quality. The assuming of new social roles for womensuch as their insertion into the labor market and, along with that, their recognition in activities that were previously known to be exclusively malehas awakened the development of studies aimed at female sexuality. In this context, one of the factors that can interfere with sexuality is spinal cord injury: a severe, potentially disabling syndrome. The biological changes, however, are not the only determinants of peoples lives, because such are also marked by the symbolization of language. From this viewpoint, it is believed that a structuring of clinical nursing care is necessary in order to consider the human aspects such as emotions, the unconscious, and the desire for life. The aim of this research was to provide the production of confects (concepts + affects) related to sexuality from the perspective of women with spinal cord injury. This is a qualitative study, in which the Social Poetic approach was used. The results indicate the diversity of the confects that involve several dimensions of sexuality and go beyond the biological perspective and, most notably, beyond the likely limitations generated by spinal cord injury on the path of womanhood. Categories were composed that revealed, among other things, symbolism related to sex, affective relationships before and after spinal cord injury, motherhood, and relations with ones body. This work aimed to contribute to constructing a concept of clinical care that exceeds the limits of altruistic care. It is believed that the interdisciplinary team and the patientinserted into the rehabilitation processhave much to gain when they are willing to transpose expositive classes and allow themselves to nurture spaces for the planning of individualized care based on listening to the subject. Further studies are needed that approach the subjects (and listening to the subjects) as the center of healthcare, and not just their complaints and the protocols on how to resolve them.
