RESUMO

The objective of this study was to investigate the communication of emotions between the performer and the listener, through the piece Piano Piece (1984) by Jamary Oliveira. The study counted with three pianists, who played and recorded the piece, and 105 listeners. A software that recorded in real time the perception of listeners has been designed for the study. The basic emotions proposed by Paul Ekman joy, sadness, anger, fear, surprise and disgust constituted the theoretical framework for the study (Ekman, 1999a). The dissertation, in six chapters, includes a review of the literature, the methodology of the experiment, a comparison of the performances of the piece Piano Piece, the results of the experiment, and conclusions. The introduction offers a glimpse of the studys context, presenting our hypothesis and the questions that we have proposed to answer. Chapter 2 brings a review of the literature on the study of emotions in general, addressing issues such as basic and complex emotions, and a review of the studies that have dealt with the transmission of emotions in music. In Chapter 3 we present the methodology developed by us for the experiment, as well as the details of the operation of Emotions Valuation Software (PAE), developed exclusively to register the emotions of pianists and listeners in real time. Chapter 4 presents a brief review of the literature of studies comparing music performances, and the comparison of the three recordings of the piece Piano Piece, made by the invited pianists. The 5th chapter analyzes the data of the experiment from the point of view of the intention of interpreters and the perception of listeners, and then uses the comparison of performances carried out in chapter 4 to subsidize some conclusions concerning the similarities and differences of perception. Finally, the findings of this investigation are presented, and suggestions for future research related to the transmission of emotions in music are made.
