RESUMO

In architecture, building the space for housing implies the construction of place, as the space to be inhabited and lived. This thesis is an attempt to contribute to a broad spectrum of studies related to domestic space in a specific perspective, since the analyses are based on the morphology of the apartments (geometric and configurational features) and its relation to the peoples ways of living; as this space provides relations between residents and visitors. The goal is to understand these relations in apartments of the Federal District, analyzing spaces as originally build and spaces after being modified by residents. The historical process shows the evolution of the type apartment over the decades after 1960, having the creation of Pilot Plan of Brasilia as a landmark, and the proliferation of such housing proposal in the Federal District. The sample consists of 168 apartments, distributed in 11 areas intended for collective housing in height, with buildings for strictly residential use. In total, 200 plans were studied, including original and restructured projects. These areas are representative of the socioeconomic diversity and the development of the territorial occupation of the Federal District for this kind of housing. The analytical model considered the space appropriation by residents and their morphological (geometric and topological) limitations. This appropriation is characterized by "light indiscipline" (use and occupancy changes) and "heavy indiscipline" (deep changes in the interior space of the apartments). Both indisciplines show that the populations preferences and needs as the search for comfort and identity in dwellings are, in some aspects, similar in different areas and social classes. The indisciplines are ways to question the physical structures of the apartments, and the residents interventions suggest discrepancies between the views of the market and of those future users. They involve lessons on how to design minimizing future costs on the residents part, forced to adapt the apartments to meet their wishes and ways of living.
