RESUMO
The practice of tattooing is as old as mankind. Its history always paralleled human evolution. Cavemen already used it as synonym of courage, for group identification of and as a means of asking the supernatural for protection. There are many reasons why people around the world use tattoos in current times. In this context, the objective of the present research was the investigation of the possible presence of pigments in the histological sections of tattooed corpses. Since tattooing involves the use of substances that color the skin, the investigation extended to the ganglion tissue next to the skin, impregnated by the dye maid. It is known that the linfonodos drain attacked areas and that in the same place the aggressive agents that in some way broke the skin protection are retained. For the investigation of this biological fact, the research collected material of 20 tattooed corpses, kindly given by the Legal Medical Institute of Vitória, of Espírito Santo and by the Legal Medical Institute of Cuiabá, State of Mato Grosso. The material consisted of 20 samples of skins, collected in the tattooed areas, and 20 samples consisting of lymphatic ganglion of the same corpses, in areas closest areas to the location of the tattooed images. All materials were properly processed in the Laboratory of Morphology of the School of Dentistry of Piracicaba - UNICAMP, and analyzed in its qualitative as well as quantitative aspect. These procedures allowed for evidences to support the intended conclusions. As a major finding, this research work concluded that in certain cases tatoos may determinants of human identification
