RESUMO

Study of the terms THEN and THEREUPON utilizing a text in 14th century archaic Portuguese and some inquiries with records of the daily speech in the city of Salvador in the 1970s and the 1990s. After some analysis, one can compare the use of these items in the texts of the two centuries cited above, and therefore observe the process of change they went through, concluding that both the THEN and the THEREUPON did not lose their original function of adverb, but the word THEN is progressing towards being a conclusive conjunction. It is clear, though, the degradation of these two elements, making them terms used in some narrative or conversational markers.
