RESUMO

The aim of this study is to check how the grammaticalization of the verb estar gets started and goes on in spoken Brazilian Portuguese. The question that has motivated this study is: would the reduced form tá replace the original one - estar - in periphrastic constructions with gerund? In order to try to answer that question, I have analyzed 5 interviews (two persons talking about a given subject) provided by NURC/SP (Preti &Castilho 1986 and 1987). Based mainly on the framework proposed by Heine &Claudi &Hünnemeyer 1991, and trying to look at grammaticalization processes as a kind of linguistic change (according to Labov s theory) I have submitted the data to the statistical software VARBRUL. From the quantitative analysis, it has been possible to see that older native speakers employ rather the plain form estar, whereas the younger ones don t even happen to use it. This fact characterizes a linguistic change in progressoAs for the morphologization of tá, although intefering elements (such as locatives and adverbial adjuncts) are not likely to be inserted between the auxiliary and the gerund, we re not yet allowed to state that the reduced form tá has been cliticized or agglutinated to the gerund
