RESUMO

This work analyses the Research and Development Program - R&D of the Companhia HidroelÃtrica do SÃo Francisco - Chesf. It intends to identify sources and manifestations of social capital and its possible association with Knowledge Management in the Company. The analysis is based upon the mixed model of social capital process and knowledge management. Uphoff s (2000) cognitive and structural categories prevail in this model, together with the approach adapted from Oliveira (2003). The model uses the concepts and connections defined by Scott (1995) for the flow of institutionalization of creation and diffusion. Social capital is defined as a set of cognitive and structural social bonds, which facilitates the collective behavior for mutual benefits. The research has a qualitative nature, with descriptive-exploratory character, and the techinique chosen is the case study. The data were collected by performing semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and non-systematic observation. The data were interpreted through thematic contend analysis. The results indicate that the Chesf Program on R&D induces a corporative behavior by the Management Group and managers of the projects, promoting articulations and strengthening interpersonal relations. The practices developed during the implementation of the program, and the policies and standards adopted stimulate and mobilize the social capital found in the company. The stimulus and use of this social capital are indicative of the creation of favorable culture to management of the organizational knowledge, which favors the process of innovation.
