RESUMO

In this dissertation, subjectivity will be studied in its forms of expression as an essential trait of human language. Based upon a corpus of texts written by elementary school children of different social classes at the third and fourth grades in the city of Salvador, Brazil, this study aims at verifying how these subjects reveal their culture, values, and ideology in their texts. The construction of sense in the text is seen from an intersubjective perspective, which does not annul the subject. Rather, the subject is perceived from a dialogic relationship. Language becomes not only communication but also (and foremost) interaction, and the subject is conceived as the one who constructs sense by considering co(n)textual factors. Besides analyzing the revelation of social subjects in their treatment of the theme and in their linguistic performance, the expression of subjectivity in the construction of references is examined by focusing on the study of deixis, on the indication of the participants in the enunciation, and on discursive deixis. Argumentation is studied in relation to enunciation from a structural perspective, and it is treated as an inherent trait of human language. The effects of sense produced by the argumentation will be analyzed through the observation of the discursive function of certain conjunctions, modal lexical items, nouns, and adjectives. This dissertation aims at revealing the subjects present in the discourse produced by these children, the subjects that could be documented in the texts written in two different elementary schools.
