RESUMO

The present study aims to understand what morbid obese females experienced upon undergoing bariatric surgery. From a mundane view, i.e., from the idea that human life is involved in the sensitive world, in history, in culture, a phenomenological inquiry was carried out by using psychotherapy sessions records and phenomenological inquiries with three former patients of this researcher, who agreed to cooperate in this inquiry. The results show that the bariatric surgery does not finish the treatment for morbid obesity to those who need it. The understanding of the physical change, through weight loss, which inevitably happens after the bariatric surgery, leads to the necessity that patients be accompanied in psychotherapy so that the effects of the surgery can be constantly maintained in their lives. The confidence resulted from the psychotherapy relation in a humanist phenomenological approach appears in the results of this inquiry as basic for a more ample understanding of the processes of emotional and behavioral changes which involve specially the anxiety that these patients take with them in their lives and that always needs to be re-organized psychologically. This study shows the emotional aspects of obesity, the level of mental distress that individuals experience when they are obese, emphasizing the necessity of a psychotherapy follow up to morbidly obese patients who need a bariatric surgery. Keywords: Obesity. Bariatric Surgery. Body. Anxiety. Psychotherapy.
