RESUMO

This study inquires into the ways suicide is analyzed by brazilian medicine through the twentieth century - from 1830 to 1900. It questions about what might have enabled this issue to be the subject of analysis of brazilian medical discourse, about what made possible the use of certain concepts, theories and appropriations in these discourses and it moreover highlights the correlation between medicine and other areas of knowledge. Thus, some thematic series were clipped and organized to explore and analyze the experience of suicide. They were presented in order to question the historic constitution of the senses, images, references and identities: mental disturbances, passions, gender differences and the influence of literature specially the Romantic period. Deviating from an authoritarian, centralizing, universalizing point of view, this study questions the ways the truth is produced about suicide and indicates its cultural and social construction
