RESUMO

This work is a qualitative study designed to access the concept and practice of continuous education under the view of a chief nurse working in a public hospital in Campinas city. This hospital is the reference for emergency care in the city and surrounds. This social research was conducted on a hermeneutic-dialetic perspective, with theoretical basis cited by MINA YO (1999) after the work of Gadamer and Habermas. These premises refer to the investigator as a social being, with insertions in the world under investigation. We assumed categories such as "education and healthcare work", "knowledge, work and power" and "relations: individual, groups and institutions", that help on the interpretation of data in thematic items: "concept of continuous education", "practice of continuous education and its consequence", "factors that influence the practice of continuous education" and "expectations and critics on continuous education". The analysis leads us to the conclusion that the chief nurses have a technicist view of continuous education inherent to their health care practice. They understand that education and healthcare play distinct roles in the hospital. Education was seen merely as "transmission of knowledge", not as a means of social intervention. We assume that this is due to a historical view of nurses as "docile elements" that aid in the maintenance of economical structures, and to contemporary educational models. Many contradictions appear with respect to practice, revealing the importance of objective conditions for the improvement of nursing care in the hospital. Nurses and professional schools must understand continuous education as a process with power to change reality, once creative reflections and consciousness of multiples determinants of practice are allowed. This determinants must not be reduced to technicist perspectives. On this basis, competence in health care can be delineated: respecting human space and resisting to market ideology that otherwise wi1l prevail in the lack of critical and political questioning
