RESUMO

Down Syndrome may be chacacterized in terms of various aspects, related to genetic, organic, cognitive or linguistic factors, among others. This study is concerned with language features usually associated with such syndrome, and focuses on issues concerning narrative production. The analyses of processes in narrative language is referenced in the historical-cultural approach, mainly with respect to the relevance of language in psychological functioning and to the dialogical character of interpersonal relationships. The majority of investigations about characteristics of Down Syndrome subjects tend to describe their language difficulties; few works are oriented to their possibilities of language construction. Seeking to contribute to the understanding of issues related to the narrative language of such individuais, this study priviledges the production of oral narratives by Down Syndrome students in the diological interplay during classroom activities. The analysis was based on video-taped situations and was organized around three topics: the composition of narrative texts, encompassing oriented, shared, and autonomous reports; the modes of participation of educators and peers in the construction of narratives by the student; and the negotiations of interlocutors about the veracity of the events being narrated. The findings indicate that Down Syndrome adolescentes éan actively participate in the construction of oral narratives, and that the dialogical interplay in the classroom allows for the constitution of such language processo As to implications for the pedagogical work, it is suggested that, in accordance with discussions by L. S. Vygotsky, educational planning must be thought, primarily, in relation to the students possibilities, and not to their limitations. Educators should invest in the overcoming of the consequences of the deficiency, promoting the construction of knowledge and of forms of action ín the students
