RESUMO

In this research we study the photographic postcards of Maceià between 1903 and 1934. We use these artefacts to show how the construction of the image of the City is the result of a collective view of the City, which is itself the result of three selective ways of looking at it: the way the photographer sees it, the way the publisher sees it, and the way the general public sees it. Our intention is to show that this form of representation is not just a simple, purified, idealisation of reality, but rather is a collective construction of the image of the City, and as such carries with it historical and existential values and meaning. In this sense we take a position contrary to the current vision of postcards as being representations which are unconnected to real life, and are just the fruit of an artistic/authorial work of the photographer. To advance the debate we focus on the representation of the passion for the hometown which is present in the production of the pioneering publisher of postcards of MaceiÃ, and verify the extent to which this representation is present in the images of each one of the fifteen series of postcards produced throughout the study period, and in the uses which the consuming public makes of these postcards during the same period of time. This approach is based on the idea that these photographic images effectively become postcards, in the sense that they are catalysts which identify collectively important elements of the landscape, because they do this publicly, that is as a result of their acquisition/appropriation by the population. For us, therefore, the Maceià of the postcards, which we present at the end of the work, is not just fruit of the sensibility of the author (the photographer), but also of the collective sensibility of three co-participants: the photographers, the publishers and the public
