RESUMO

The theme of this study is the phenomenon known as complementizer agreement which characterizes the dialects of Dutch and German. I will present a few facts of rheinpfdlzisch, a dialect from the southwest of Germany, which has not been described yet. In order to interpret these facts, I will use the linguistic theory as it has been developed in the Mimimalist Program by Chomsky (1993). The assumption of one more functional category AgrC between CP and AgrS will explain the examples with complementizer agreement without using the hypothesis which argues in favour of a movement of AgrS to C. The head of the projection AgrC is occupied by the subject clitic and its specifier by the agreement morpheme. AgrC is related to the CP system which is subdivided into two projections: one for the Wh-elements (WhP) and one for topicalizations (TopP). I am assuming a relation between the realization of the first position of the sentence and the movement of the verb: the elements in the Top- and Wh projections determine the specification of AgrC with respect to its V -features. In topicalizations and matrix questions the verb moves to AgrC which in this case has strong V-features. In the subordinate sentences, AgrC is characterized by weak V-features, caused by the occurence of a complementizer in the head position of the initial projection. This results in the fact that the verb does not move. In sentences that begin with the subject, the CP system is not activated, the verb stops in AgrS. This study therefore assumes the asymmetric analysis of German (IP and CP). I tend to relate the central suggestion of complementizer agreement with the discussion of more general questions like the characterization of the category C in German and the possibility of its recursion. The last chapter deals with the apparent asymmetry between matrix .and subordinate clauses
